The practical answer: compare Hong Kong personal loans using the annualised percentage rate (APR) and the total repayment amount, not a promotional monthly flat rate alone. APR is designed to reflect interest and relevant fees, but you still need to read each lender’s terms and check whether the assumptions match your loan.
Why a flat rate is not enough
A monthly flat rate is applied to the original loan amount in many instalment-loan examples. Your actual borrowing cost also depends on the term, repayment schedule, handling charges, early-repayment fees, and how the lender calculates interest. A low-looking monthly number can therefore hide a higher total cost.
For a useful comparison, record:
- Amount borrowed and the amount actually paid out after fees.
- Tenor and number of repayments.
- Monthly repayment and total repayment over the full term.
- APR, handling charges, service charges, and early-repayment charges.
- Whether the quoted rate or promotion has an expiry date or eligibility condition.
The comparison should use the same loan amount and term. If the terms differ, show the difference rather than presenting one monthly repayment as proof that one product is cheaper.
Check repayment ability before comparing products
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority personal-credit guidance says borrowers should understand the repayment schedule, interest method, and fees, compare products using APR, repay on time, and avoid over-borrowing. It also explains that late or missed payments can affect a consumer’s credit record.
A worked example should be labelled illustrative. For instance, a hypothetical HK$100,000 loan over 24 months is not a quote and says nothing about a bank’s current approval criteria or price. Do not use a calculator result as a promise of approval, a guaranteed saving, or a recommendation to borrow.

Next step
Ask each lender for the APR, total repayment, all fees, and early-repayment terms for the same amount and tenor. If the product terms are unclear or repayment would rely on future income, stop and seek independent help before applying.
